Trustees and administrators of Liberty-Eylau Independent School District took a walkthrough Thursday of the district's new elementary school, located on U.S. Highway 59. Known as the "Rock School," the original building, constructed in 1938 as a Works Progress Administration project, was demolished to construct the new school at the same site. Rocks from the former building's facade were used to create the entrance and entryway. The school was built with funds from a 2016 bond election, in which voters approved $20.9 million in bonds for district-wide improvements including the new school, a new roof at the middle school, renovations to the Pre-K building, an addition to the Career and Technology Building at the high school, heating and air systems and a new track and turf at Harris Stadium.

The new school includes a gym, music and computer rooms, a special education suite and four teachers' lounges. One of the three long hallways includes a safety shelter, which the state of Texas now requires for new school construction.

The classroom furniture, specially designed by Ledwell Office Solutions, includes modular pieces to create a more flexible learning environment.

A grand opening for the school will be held at 5 p.m. Aug. 10.
