Area woman gets 73-year sentence for drug conviction

A 56-year-old Little River County, Ark., woman was found guilty recently by a Sevier County jury for possession of a variety of drugs and sentenced to 73 years in prison, according to Prosecutor Bryan Chesshir.

The jury found Karen Sossamon guilty Tuesday during a trial in the Sevier County Circuit Court in De Queen.

Sossamon was charged with and found guilty of the following:

  •  Possession of meth or cocaine with the purpose to deliver
  •  Possession of a schedule I or schedule II controlled substance that is not meth or cocaine with the purpose to deliver
  •  Possession of a schedule VI controlled substance with the purpose to deliver
  •  Drug paraphernalia
  •  Obstructing governmental operations

Sossamon was arrested in a car about 2:30 a.m. June 28, 2017, during a traffic stop by De Queen Police Pfc. Justin Gentry.

During the traffic stop, Gentry found several empty clear baggies; a small set of digital scales; three separate bags containing a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana; three separate bags containing suspected meth; and 15 white pills suspected to be hydrocodone.
