Union Pacific officials say a mechanical malfunction is to blame for an oil fire aboard a locomotive traveling through Texarkana shortly after 4 p.m. Thursday.

Company spokesman Jeff DeGraff said the fire resulted from a spark and affected the second of three engines, which were pulling the train's freight and tank cars.

The train was northbound toward Union Pacific's rail yard south of downtown Texarkana when the crew in the lead locomotive spotted the flames bursting from the locomotive's exhaust stacks. The crew stopped the train and alerted Texarkana, Texas, Fire Department.

"We were able to put water into the locomotive's air intakes and that helped extinguish the flames," Assistant Fire Chief Chris Black said.

DeGraff said no one was injured in the blaze and no hazardous materials were spilled.

Larry Vaden, building manager at Bi-State Justice Building, said he could see smoke from the blaze as he stood on the Bi-State roof.

DeGraff said two of the three locomotives and about six of the rail cars will remain at the rail yard for cleaning and repairs.
