Food bank needs help picking corn

Farmer donates 40,000 pounds of fresh produce

Harvest Regional Food Bank needs 50 to 100 volunteers thanks to a generous donation.

From 8 a.m. to noon June 25 and June 26, food bank volunteers will pick sweet corn from a farm in Foreman, Ark.

"For the past few years we've gotten a generous donation of sweet corn from a corn grower in our area," said Camille Wrinkle, Harvest executive director. "He plants a couple of acres for us to use each year. This year our goal is to have at least 25 to 50 volunteers on each of those days."

Last year, Harvest collected 40,000 pounds of fresh corn from this farm. It was much-needed fresh produce that benefited local families.

"We were able to provide it to families who otherwise wouldn't have access to fresh produce. For a lot of families, fresh fruits and vegetables are sort of a luxury and not something they consider buying when they're going to the grocery store," Wrinkle said. "In some cases the areas we're serving don't have readily available fruits and vegetables because they don't have a true grocery store in town. They may be getting their food from a dollar store or convenience store."

To volunteer, call Harvest Regional Food Bank at 870-774-1398.

"All they need to do is contact our office and we'll give them the details," Wrinkle said.
