Veterans group moving vigil to a later date in September

The Texarkana Chapter 278 of the Vietnam Veterans of America is planning to hold their annual POW-MIA Vigil a little later in September starting this year.

Instead of holding the vigil during the Labor Day weekend, the VVA plans to move the vigil to the weekend of Sept. 21- 22 this year. The move coincides with the fact that Sept. 21 is nationally recognized as POW-MIA Recognition Day.

As in years past, the vigil will be held at the Korea-Vietnam Memorial at West Seventh Street and North State Line Avenue i in downtown Texarkana.

The vigil is to honor and remember those classified as prisoners of war as well as those still listed as missing in action.

The VVA is also making plans to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the construction of the memorial itself later this year. The site was dedicated and opened to the public on Nov. 12, 1988.

In other business, the Texarkana Area Veterans Council agreed earlier this month to hold the Texarkana Veterans Day Parade on Nov. 10, with this year's theme being the Centennial Anniversary of the end of World War I. The war ended 100 years ago on Nov. 11, 1918.
