Immigration rally set for Friday at TC

A nonpartisan rally regarding United States immigration policy is scheduled for 8 p.m. Friday in Texarkana, Texas.

The "Families Belong Together" rally will take place outside the local office of U.S. Rep. John Ratcliffe, R-Heath, on the Texarkana College campus, 2500 N. Robison Road.

The event originally was meant as a protest against immigrant family separation at the U.S.-Mexico border, which in recent days has caused widespread outrage. On Wednesday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order ending the family separation policy, but the rally will go on "to discuss permanent legislation," organizer Amber Keith-Smith said.

Keith-Smith is active in local Democratic politics but said about the rally that she represents a "coalition of concerned citizens" without party affiliation and everyone is invited to attend.

"I posted this (the event's Facebook page) because they are mostly afraid to," she said.

Pastor David Watkins of Twin City Church of Christ is scheduled to speak, as are families affected by immigration policy.
