A 26-year-old Terrell, Texas, man was arrested Tuesday in Texarkana, Texas, after allegedly engaging in sexual activity with an 11-year-old boy in the library restroom.

Javier Perez, 26, was booked into the Bi-State Justice Building jail on a single charge of aggravated sexual assault of a child after library employees reportedly saw him enter the restroom with the boy and intervened.

About 5:40 p.m. Tuesday, officers were sent to Texarkana Public Library, 600 W. Third Street, about a possible sexual assault. A library employee said she was concerned after seeing an unknown man, later identified as Perez, and an 11-year-old boy she knows walk into the restroom together, police said. She then asked a male employee to check on the child.

"When the employee entered the restroom, he could see the feet of two people inside a locked stall and believed that they were involved in sexual activity. He yelled at them and ran to get his supervisor," said Shawn Vaughn, Texas-side police spokesman.

Library staff members then saw Perez leave the restroom, immediately exit the building and run north toward Randy Sams' Outreach Shelter at 402 Oak St., Vaughn said.

Officers went to the shelter and spoke with Perez, who agreed to accompany them to the police department to be interviewed by detectives, police said.

Detectives arrested Perez at the end of his interview. His bond was set at $100,000.
