Arkansas-side recycling center to close

The Texarkana, Ark., recycling center will close indefinitely March 16, the city announced today.

"It is really a multitude of factors that brought us to this point," said Brandy Chewning, recycling coordinator, in a news release.

"Staffing changes made it impossible to continue operation as we were, and with a hiring freeze there was not an easy way to address that. There are also several challenges in the recycling market that are driving massive changes across the industry, and we would have struggled to meet those demands," she said.

The city will continue to hold its Green Texarkana recycling drive from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the second Saturday of each month at East Third and Hazel streets. It collects paper, cardboard and household plastics.
