During a Texarkana, Texas, City Council meeting Monday, members of the public can express their opinions on a proposal to extend alcohol service hours to 2 a.m.

The council will hold a public hearing on the proposed ordinance, which would allow Texas-side bars and restaurants with the appropriate state permit to serve alcohol two hours past the current 12 a.m. cutoff time.

If the ordinance eventually is approved, an establishment wishing to serve alcohol until 2 a.m. would have to get a Mixed Beverage Late Hours Permit from Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission.

The city already requires establishments that serve alcohol to have a TABC Mixed Beverage With FB (food and beverage) Permit, which means the majority of their sales must be food.

City management staff has met with Texas-side Police Chief Dan Shiner, Fire Chief Eric Schlotter and City Attorney Jeff Lewis to discuss the ordinance, according to City Council meeting agenda documents. City staff members recommend approval of the ordinance.

The council will also hold public hearings on adopting an update of the city's Comprehensive Plan and rezoning a tract of land at 4001 Mall Drive to allow an auto collision repair business to be built there.

The agenda includes an open forum during which members of the public may address the council on any topic for up to five minutes each.

The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday at City Hall, 220 Texas Blvd.
