Civil War-era letters among missing files

Officials with Southwest Arkansas Regional Archives in Washington, Ark., recently reported missing historical documents including Confederate money and Civil War letters.

The archive is at 201 Arkansas Highway 195 S.

"Melissa Nesbitt, the manager of the Southwest Arkansas Regional Archives in Washington, reported at least 21 items of historical literature and Confederate currency that had been removed from the archives in Washington, Ark. Ms. Nesbitt stated that she located these items online at a Little Rock archive," said Hempstead County Sheriff James Singleton.

Nesbitt "noticed some property (Confederate $20 bill and numerous Civil War letters) that were supposed to be in Old Washington. Melissa stated that she went to search for the property and found that all of it was missing. Melissa stated that someone could have stolen the property from 2011 to now," Singleton said.

"Melissa stated that there are markings on the $20 bill and every letter that they have made to show that the property is from Old Washington and she could see every marking on each letter and the bill. Melissa stated that she has all of the pictures and markings to show that they own the property," he said.

Investigators are still trying to determine a value on the missing items.

The Sheriff's Office has asked the Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division for assistance in the theft.
