Annual Heart Walk slated for Saturday

The American Heart Association Heart Walk will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday at Spring Lake Park. Registration begins at 9 a.m. The kickball tournament kicks off at 10:30 a.m.

"There are no more spaces available. We have 20 teams of 10 people each from the community participating," said Samantha Evans, AHA corporate marketing director.

Other activities include a giant game of Twister and and Kid's Zone with fun activities for children.

Participating in the Heart Walk is free but people who donate or raise $25 will receive a T-shirt.

"The money raised is for local education and awareness, CPR training, our youth market and local advocacy. Research dollars go for research projects in Little Rock and Tyler," Evans said. "Seventy-one percent of what's raised stays here locally."

The youth market is a team that works with local elementary schools for Jump Rope for Heart.

"We teach them how to be active and give them rewards for things they've accomplished, like reducing their sugar or being active for an hour each day," Evans said. "We know if we can curb the health of our youth, we'll have a healthier community. Our focus is making sure they have an education at a young age so we can get them before they learn all the bad habits."

The community is invited to attend the event.
