CHRISTUS St. Michael gets an A for patient safety

CHRISTUS St. Michael Health System was recently given an A rating for patient safety by the Leapfrog Group.

CHRISTUS St. Michael was one of 750 awarded the highest grade possible for the fourth year in a row because of its efforts in protecting patients from harm and meeting the highest safety standards in the U.S.

"Patient safety is a critical component of our care at CHRISTUS St. Michael," said Chris Karam, president and CEO of CHRISTUS St. Michael Health System. "... Our entire medical staff and every member of our team give their all every day to ensure that our patients are cared for in the safest environment possible, and we will continue to build upon this success and seek to consistently focus on patient safety at CHRISTUS St. Michael Health System facilities across Northeast Texas."

The Washington, D.C.-based Leapfrog Group, which aims to improve health care quality and safety, released its Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades on May 9. The group assigns an A, B, C, D or F grade to hospitals across the country based on their performance in preventing medical errors, infections and other harms among patients in their care.

"This is the only national rating of how well hospitals protect patients from preventable harm and death, such as medical errors, infections and injuries," said Leah Binder, the organization's president and CEO.

Developed with the guidance of an expert panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 27 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to about 2,500 U.S. hospitals twice per year. It is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public.
