The Texarkana Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta gave $1,000 to the Texarkana College Foundation on Wednesday to be used for student scholarships.

Carolyn Moore, chapter president, said they wanted to give back to the community

"Delta Sigma Theta was founded on Christian principles to promote academic excellence and provide assistance to those in need," Moore stated in a press release. "Our hope is that today's gift will help enhance the educational opportunities for area students by providing scholarship funds."

The local chapter has 63 members who help raise funds year-round through special events and projects.

"The money we raise from our community-goes back into our community," Moore said. "We contribute thousands of dollars every year to help fund scholarships and educational opportunities."

TC President James Henry Russell received the check on behalf of TC Foundation.

"Today's gift from Delta Sigma Theta Alumnae Chapter will help TC build a college-going culture in our region," he said. "The sorority's purpose aligns with TC's mission and goals. We are so grateful to have the support of this dynamic chapter to help students earn a college degree or credential to ensure brighter futures for themselves and their families."

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a private, not-for-profit organization whose purpose is to provide assistance and support through established programs in local communities throughout the world. The Texarkana Alumnae Chapter was founded in 1975 and has a long history of community service.

The TC Foundation's mission is to enhance the overall reputation of Texarkana College, to provide external resources to fund College priorities and to create opportunities for the college to build partnerships with alumni, friends, donors, corporations and foundations. The foundation's goal is to provide TC students with affordable and accessible opportunities in higher education.
