Local Team Jackass completes Ironman

Members of Texarkana's Team Jackass are back in town after recently competing in an Ironman Triathlon in Tempe, Ariz.

"We have a good crew who do these races and we did really well," team member Barry Bryant said.

Nine team members competed in the triathlon. They were Bryant, Coy Bryant, Mark Sutherland, Brent Bunch, Brad Denis, Nancy Johnston, Todd Payne and James Thomas.

This was the first triathlon for several team members, Barry Bryant said.

Sutherland had the best time of Team Jackass. He did the entire event in 11 hours and seven minutes.

Bryant and his son, Coy Bryant, finished in just over 12 hours. Other team members finished in between 12 and 14 hours.

Ironman Triathlon consists of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride and a 26.2-mile run to finish.

"It's an all-day deal," Barry Bryant said. "There are harder things, but this is the hardest one-day event."

There are no breaks in between the events except for the time it takes to change between the events, he said.

Participants changed out of wet suits after the swim and they change shoes between the bike event and the running.

The group trained for about six months.

Team Jackass is a member of the United States Triathlon Teams. The name came from former member Ron Schmidt.

"We used to tease him and then he got really good, so we started calling him a jackass and it stuck and we became Team Jackass," Barry Bryant said.

The triathlons are for men and women who are 18 or older. Several members of Team Jackass are in their 50s.

Barry Bryant said he would recommend a triathlon to any runner or cyclist or anyone interested in endurance athletics.

"You are physically beat-up at the end of it," Barry Bryant said. "But it's a cool feeling, too. Like a runner's high."
