A Texarkana, Ark., man was pronounced dead Monday at the scene of a one-vehicle accident in Texarkana, Texas.

Randy Smith, 62, of Texarkana, Ark., may have had a medical episode that caused the crash as he was driving, said Shawn Vaughn, spokesman for Texarkana, Texas Police Department. However, the accident remains under investigation.

The accident happened about 1:45 p.m.

Smith was northbound on Piney Road near U.S. Highway 82 in a Ford pickup when he left the road, struck the curb and flipped on its side at the edge of the Exxon/Wendy's parking lot, said Vaughn.

The truck also struck a utility pole, breaking it in two, and knocking out power to the convenience store and some of the surrounding area.

Smith's wife and four grandchildren, ages 3, 8, 10 and 12, were injured in the crash. They were all taken to a local hospital.

Their injuries were not expected to be life-threatening.

Smith's body will be sent to Dallas for an autopsy.
