Bark in the Park returns Saturday, offering free rabies shots and Texarkana, Texas, licenses for pets.

Texas-side Animal Control Services will provide free license registrations for cats and dogs that live inside the city limits. Free three-year rabies vaccinations will be available for all cats and dogs.

Microchipping and other vaccinations will be available for a fee. Cats must be brought to the event in carriers.

In lieu of payment, donations will be accepted to assist in funding future Animal Control Services activities.

Attendees will also have the chance to win door prizes while learning more about the pet services available in Texarkana from local vendors.

City licenses normally cost $10 for animals that have been spayed or neutered or $30 for those that have not. Failure to license a dog, cat or ferret that lives in the city can result in a Municipal Court fine.

Last year's Bark in the Park, the first, was a big success, said Executive Director of Code Enforcement and Inspections Mashell Daniel.

The event resulted in 225 city pet license registrations, almost 50 more than in 2015, 2016 and the preceding portion of 2017 combined. Staff and volunteers administered 356 free rabies vaccinations at a cost to the city of about 89 cents per pet, Daniel reported to the City Council a year ago.

Bark in the Park takes place 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the pavilion near the Kylee Sullivan Dog Park in Spring Lake Park, 4303 N. Park Road.
