Battle on the Border to be at On the Border

Annual fundraiser to benefit Imagination Library, which provides books for children

The United Way of Greater Texarkana's second annual Battle on the Border is scheduled to take place from 5 p.m. to 1o p.m. Sept. 29 at On the Border.

This year's event was moved to the restaurant from Spring Lake Park to help cut back on overhead.

"We did it last year at the park. So many dollars were spent on putting it together, it didn't help us net very much," said Mark Bledsoe, UW president and CEO.

Bledsoe hopes to raise at least $15,000 this year and is well on the way, with $10,000 in profits already secured.

Sol-Def, a Fleetwood Mac tribute band, and the Moss Brothers Band will provide the entertainment.

Sponsorship tickets to the event are $100 per couple for entry into a VIP section. On the Border will also be open to regular business and will donate a portion of food and drink sales.

All the funds raised from Battle on the Border will go toward Imagination Library, a program that gives a book a month to children 0 to 5.

Imagination Library started in March.

"We're handing out cards to the parents of every newborn born at Wadley (Regional Medical Center) from zip codes 75501 and 71854. It's then up to their parents to fill out the cards and send them in," Bledsoe said.

The United Way has to have money secured to pay for a child from birth to completion, $125 a month.

Bledsoe hopes to see Imagination Library continue to grow.

"Our hope is to expand zip codes. We're expecting it to continue to grow. This project is just so big," he said.
