A child who was airlifted to Little Rock on Tuesday for medical treatment has died, according to Sgt. Kristi Bennett, spokeswoman for Texarkana, Ark., Police Department.

Two Texarkana, Ark., residents were arrested Tuesday on charges of first-degree domestic battery after a 3-year-old girl was airlifted to Arkansas Children's Hospital to treat serious external and internal injuries.

Authorities are now considering additional charges

Police responded at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday to CHRISTUS St. Michael Health System's call about an unresponsive toddler with suspected injuries caused by abuse, said Bennett.

McKenna Belcher-Cawley, 26, and Everette Cawley, 23, have been charged with domestic battery, Bennett said.

Cawley is the biological father of the girl and Belcher-Cawley is the child's stepmother, police said.

After receiving initial treatment in Texarkana, the child was transported by helicopter to Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock.

Two additional children, one infant and one toddler, were removed from the home and are in Department of Human Services custody.

The case remains under investigation, Bennett said
