SWEPCO earns federal nod for energy efficiency

Southwestern Electric Power Co. has been named a 2019 Energy Star Partner of the Year Sustained Excellence Award winner for the company's energy efficiency program in Arkansas.

This is the fifth consecutive year SWEPCO has earned the recognition.

The 2019 award is for Energy Efficiency Program Delivery, Home Performance with Energy Star. SWEPCO's Home Performance with Energy Star program promotes the use of Energy Star-certified products and technologies that help improve a home's energy efficiency and comfort.

Energy Star awards are presented by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy.

"I applaud the 2019 Energy Star Award winners," said Bill Wehrum, EPA assistant administrator for Air and Radiation. "Their innovation and leadership enhance America's economic competitiveness. Reducing costly energy waste improves air quality and public health while protecting the environment."

The Sustained Excellence Award is the highest honor among Energy Star Awards. It is presented to partners that have already received Energy Star Partner of the Year recognition for a minimum of two consecutive years and have gone beyond the criteria needed to qualify for recognition.

The award recognizes accomplishments in 2018, when SWEPCO completed 1,776 single-family and 1,994 multifamily projects in the Home Performance with Energy Star program, saving approximately 10.6 gigawatt-hours in energy. According to the EPA, this savings are equivalent to removing 1,591 vehicles from the road for a full year. Savings per single-family home increased 14 percent compared to the previous program year. SWEPCO also implemented a joint Home Performance with Energy Star program with Black Hills Energy Arkansas, resulting in the completion of 375 joint projects.
