Arrest made in early morning fatal shooting in Texarkana, Ark.

Police believe victim and suspect were engaged in an altercation at time of shooting

Texarkana, Ark., police say a woman was fatally shot early Wednesday after apparently engaging in an altercation with a man who now faces a first-degree murder charge.

Jaqualyn Paxton, 18, suffered a gunshot wound as the two were reportedly fighting at the Village Park South Apartments parking lot at 2225 East St. early Wednesday, Kristi Bennett, TAPD spokeswoman stated in a press release.

Police were dispatched to the scene about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday and determined Paxton was being transported by friends to a local hospital, according to Bennett.

Paxton later succumbed to her injuries and did not survive. 

 The suspect, Markelle Davis, 19, was located by officers and Miller County deputies moments after leaving the scene. 

Davis has been arrested on a first-degree murder charge, according to Bennett.

This investigation is ongoing.
