Puppies with suspected road rash now recovering with an animal rescue

TEXARKANA - Two puppies recovering from suspected road rash are now in the care of an animal rescue and will eventually be taken to new homes in the New England area.

"They needed more treatment and more attention than we could give them here at the shelter. They are with a rescue group and I have heard they are doing well," said Charles Lokey, director of the Texarkana Animal Care and Adoption Center.

Three male boxer-mix puppies were found in late July in the Sugar Hill Road area of Texarkana, Ark. The pups were dehydrated and had wounds on their backs that appeared to be road rash. Investigators believe the puppies may have been thrown from a vehicle. One of the three pups died from its injuries, Lokey said.

Many animal rescues in this area take dogs to northern states such as Massachusetts and Vermont where there are fewer unwanted animals, Lokey said.

Whoever is responsible for throwing the puppies from a vehicle could face animal cruelty charges. The case remains under investigation.

"It's still open if anybody knows anything about what happened to them," Lokey said.

Anyone with information on this crime should call Texarkana CrimeStoppers at 903-798-STOP or the Texarkana Animal Care and Adoption Center at 870-773-6388.

Though these puppies are no longer in Texarkana, Lokey said there are still some really nice dogs and cats available.

The adoption center is taking part in today's nationwide campaign called Clear the Shelters, where pets are offered at reduced prices in order to help them find homes.

For the first 20 dogs and first five cats adopted today, the center will charge only its basic adoption fee. Spaying or neutering, rabies vaccination, and microchipping will be free.

The adoption fee is $40 for dogs and $20 for cats.
