Depot slowly hiring back laid-off workers

Red River Army Depot is taking on new workers.

Ever since about 900 contract and federal term workers were laid off last year, the depot has been slowly rehiring some back in groups of a dozen to up to 50 workers, according to depot commander Col. Stephen M. York at this year's Better Business Bureau Torch Awards in June.

Now, according to RRAD public affairs, there are open positions available for those looking for work. According to an announcement from the office, "The current workforce at Red River is stabilized. Our workforce-to-workload ratio does not require any major adjustments. Though we are not hiring a mass number of employees, job opportunities are open by visiting www.usajobs.gov."

In addition, today is the last official day of RRAD's Christmas in July. The public affairs office describes Christmas in July thusly.

"RRAD has been contributing to the Toys for Tots campaign since 1989. Since then, depot members have donated over 57,000 toys to the campaign. This is the depot's first time conducting a summer toy drive in order to give the team more opportunity to give back to our local community. In addition to the toy drive, Team Red River also conducted a food drive in May and June. Food drives are also conducted annually."

Additional facts about Christmas in July:

  •  Boxes marked 'Toys for Tots" have been placed across the entire depot. Team members can simply place toys inside the designated boxes. Each depot directorate has a point of contact who will ensure all toys for their area are taken to the central location for storage until December.
  •  Any new, unwrapped toys are good donations. Team members may also make monetary donations as well.
  •  Team members may call Mary Jayne Locke, Toys for Tots coordinator for Red River, at 903-334-4137.
  •  Though the end of campaign is today, toys will be accepted through the end of the month. Team members still wishing to donate next week may call 903-334-4137.
