Texas High student newspaper gets Pacemaker Award

TEXARKANA, Texas - The Texas High School Tiger Times newspaper has received the coveted Pacemaker Award for excellence in scholastic newspapers, one of 19 high school newspapers nationwide to receive the award.

Given by the National Scholastic Press Association, the award is for the Newspaper Broadsheet 17-plus pages category. There were approximately 220 entries with 49 finalists.

Awards were given Nov. 13 in Washington, DC during the NSPA Fall National High School Journalism Convention Awards Ceremony.

Judging categories included: Newspaper Broadsheet eight or fewer pages; Newspaper Broadsheet 9-16 pages; Newspaper Broadsheet 17+ pages; Newspaper Tabloid; Newsmagazines and Jr. High/Middle School Newspapers.

"I am extremely proud of the newspaper staff for winning this award," Journalism Sponsor Rebecca Potter said. "They continue to set high standards for themselves and they are dedicated to producing a high-quality publication for the students of Texas High."

Entries were judged based on the following criteria: coverage and content; quality of writing and reporting; leadership on the opinion page; evidence of in-depth reporting; layout and design; photography and graphics.
