TEXARKANA, Texas - A Waggoner Creek Elementary School student's idea for a small community project to help children whose families can't afford soccer equipment is getting a lot of interest.

John Stewart said he is astonished at the response his son's simple request for donations has generated. John Stewart took a picture of the flyer his son, 10-year-old Brysen Stewart, created and posted it on his Facebook page. Officials with Texarkana Soccer Association sent a copy of the flyer to parents with children who've recently played in the league and John Stewart's social media post has been shared repeatedly.

Brysen Stewart and his parents, John and Alden Stewart, will host a collection event from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. today at Grady T. Wallace Park under the awning near the basketball court. Anyone with used cleats, shin guards, balls or other soccer equipment is encouraged to clean out their closets and help kids play soccer.

John Stewart said he expects members of his son's travel soccer team and many other soccer enthusiasts to participate. The public is invited and urged to participate. John Stewart said the items collected will go to children in need.

"A giving heart is a caring heart," John Stewart said. "Soccer is so good for kids and Brysen was just thinking of all the kids who don't have a chance to play soccer because they don't have the equipment. This might give them that chance."
