Firefighters encourage training for children

Texarkana, Texas, firefighters have responded to two house fires recently that were a result of children playing with matches or lighters.

"Luckily, these were fires where no one was injured. But it still opened our eyes to how easily these types of fires can happen," Fire Marshal Chris Black said.

Firefighters want to encourage parents of young children to talk to help them understand the dangers of fire and what to do if one breaks out.

The local fire departments usually visit schools in October for fire safety presentations.

"It may be something we have to do more than once a year," Black said.

He said as the summer months approach, children will have more time on their hands.

The Fire Department has safety brochures and coloring books to help children learn to be safe.

Firefighters also advise having a family plan in case of fire:

  •  Test smoke alarms monthly and change batteries when you change your clocks.
  •  Teach children not to hide in the event of a fire.
  •  Learn to call 911 in case of fire.
  •  Create a family escape plan that includes knowing the exits from the home and choosing a family meeting place such a landmark near the home.
  •  Not going back inside for any reason.
  •  How to stop, drop, cover and roll if clothes are on fire.
