Arkansas-side police investigates mail theft

The Texarkana, Ark., Police Department is seeking information from the public in a mail theft case.

Earlier this month, a suspect was captured on camera stealing mail from a residential area in Texarkana, Ark.

Anyone who recognizes this vehicle or the driver should contact Detective Brett Gatlin at 903-798-3154, or Crime Stoppers at 903-793-STOP.

Mail thefts usually happen in clusters in this area with a suspect hitting several boxes, TAPD spokeswoman Sgt. Kristi Bennett said. However, she said it is not as common as in years past because so many people pay their bills online.

The following includes tips on how to prevent mail theft, according to fightingidentitycrimes.com:

  •  Never send cash or gift cards as they are almost impossible to reclaim. Opt for sending a secure check instead or an online payment.
  •  Never leave mail overnight. The more time you leave your mailbox full, the longer a scammer has to take it.
  •  Shred any junk mail. Junk mail such as pre-approved credit card applications are the most common ways thieves can get information. With just a Social Security number, an identity thief can open a new line of credit in your name using these application forms.
  •  Secure your mailbox. Make sure surroundings are well-lit. A visible home surveillance system can create a threat against someone who may be after your mail.

Mail theft is a federal offense. If you believe you were a victim of mail theft, report the incident to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
