Trial rescheduled for man charged in fatal vehicle accident

A trial has been rescheduled for Colton Daniel Ard, 20, of Ashdown, Ark., who was charged with negligent homicide for allegedly causing a fatal vehicle accident in Little River County.

The trial is scheduled for March 12 in Little River County Circuit Court in Ashdown. The pretrial date was scheduled for Feb. 27.

The accident occurred March 7, 2016, and was reported at 7:51 p.m. at Arkansas highways 234 and 108 near Alleene.

Ard is charged with felony negligent homicide and a misdemeanor driving-while-intoxicated first offense, according to court documents.

The collision killed Mason S. Gross, 18, of Ashdown, who was a passenger in a 1993 Jeep driven by Ard. Gross was pronounced dead at the scene by Little River County Coroner Roddy Smith.

The Jeep failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection and collided with the trailer of a Dodge driven by Lawrence Chandler, 52, of De Queen, Ark., according to a report by Arkansas State Police Trooper First Class Travis Hale.

The arrest warrant prepared by Hale said Ard was "driving in a negligent manner" while being allegedly impaired with a blood alcohol content of .08, over the legal limit in Arkansas, at the time of the collision.

Ard was released from jail after posting his bond of $15,000.
