Texarkana, Texas, community development staff will be available Monday to help residents apply for federally funded home-improvement loans.

City staffers will distribute application packets, accept completed applications and answer applicants' questions from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Texarkana Bowie County Health Clinic, 902 W. 12th St. Residents who own the homes where they live may apply for deferred, forgivable loans of up to $20,000 for essential repairs not covered by insurance. Priority is given to veterans, elderly and disabled applicants and those with the lowest incomes.

The loans are funded by grants as part of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's owner-occupied housing rehabilitation assistance program. The program rehabilitates single-family, owner-occupied homes by making required repairs to bring them into compliance with current local codes as much as feasible. An information sheet about the program and how to apply, including qualifications and required documents, is available online at bit.ly/2FaIJ3l. For more information, contact city Grants Administrator Betsy Freeman at 903-798-1779 or [email protected].
