City Council to vote on Schutte as police chief

The Texarkana, Texas, City Council is expected on Monday to confirm Kevin Schutte as the city's next police chief.

Voting on an ordinance to confirm Schutte's appointment is the only action item scheduled for the council's first regular meeting of the new year.

Schutte has served as acting police chief since Dec. 28, 2018, when former Chief Dan Shiner retired. He previously served as assistant chief beginning in 2015.

"I believe Kevin will be the right choice for Texarkana as the city grows and he will be attentive to our citizens' needs and concerns. Kevin has the ability and leadership skills to maintain and grow the current standards and professionalism of the police department.

"I ask for your support in confirming my appointment of Kevin Schutte as the new Police Chief," City Manager Shirley Jaster stated to the council in pre-meeting documents.

If the council approves the ordinance, Schutte will become chief of the Texarkana, Texas, Police Department immediately.

The agenda includes an open forum during which members of the public may address the council on any topic for up to five minutes each.

The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday at City Hall, 220 Texas Blvd.
