TISD board sets trustee election; two seats up for vote

Texarkana Independent School District's Board of Trustees approved an order calling for a trustee election during their regular meeting Tuesday.

The election will be held May 4. Up for re-election are District 3's Wanda Boyette and District 5's Bryan DePriest. Boyette has been on the board since 1995, and DePriest has served on the board since 2006. Both will seek re-election.

The board also held a public hearing on the annual Texas Academic Performance Report from the Texas Education Agency. The report contains information on how students performed in 2017-18 on the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness tests. It is broken down by demographics and shows that the district's students are close to, or above, the state average on the assessments. The report can be found at txkisd.net.

Trustees also approved submitting a TEA staff development minutes waiver to the state to provide a maximum of 2,100 minutes to use for professional development in place of student instruction.

The 2019-20 tuition rate for ineligible students was also set during Tuesday's meeting. The rate of $5,359 is set according to the estimated per-student allotment the district expects to receive from the state.

The final District of Innovation plan for January 2019 to December 2024 was also approved for submission to the state commissioner of education. The DOI concept was passed in 2015 by the 84th Legislative Session to give traditional independent school districts most of the flexibilities available to Texas' open-enrollment charter schools. The plan allows districts to set their own calendar and also affords other exemptions from the state plan.

The next meeting will be held Feb. 19.
