United Way taking donations for garage sale

United Way of Greater Texarkana is taking donations for its Community Wide garage sale.

The sale will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 12 at Williams Memorial United Methodist Church, 4000 Moores Lane, Texarkana, Texas.

Donated items should be in good repair.

"Furniture sales, well, as long as it's in good condition," said Mark Bledsoe, United Way CEO. "We don't take old televisions or out-of-date computers or other out-of-date technology. We will take clothing in good condition, decorative pieces like paintings or lamps. Household items typically do well."

All proceeds from this sale benefit the United Way. Funds will support programs in the area that focus on improving health, education or income.

In the past, the United Way has raised $3,500 to $5,000 with the garage sale.

"If people have good items they no longer need or if they're moving, they can write it off as a donation and it goes to a great cause. Each year it just gets tougher and tougher to raise funds and we're just thankful these funds are able to stay here locally," Bledsoe said. "It's to the point where every project that you have is vital to the entire campaign. We can't fund the programs we want to fund if not for the generous people in the community. We have 30-plus programs for nine different counties."

For more information, call Amy Schulz at 903-794-3105 or deliver donated items to the United Way office, 214 Spruce St., Texarkana, Texas.
