More than 16 inches of rain recorded in Dierks

A National Weather Service Cooperative Observer in Dierks, Ark., has reported a 24-hour rainfall measurement of 16.17 inches.

The rainfall amount was from the 24-hour period between 1 p.m. Monday and 1 p.m. Tuesday as the last bands of Barry moved through the area, said NWS Shreveport meteorologist Chris Nuttall.

"It's the highest amount recorded in our warning area, he said.

NWS Cooperative Observers are volunteers who allow the NWS to install equipment on their property such as rain gauges and temperature sensors, Nuttall said.

A crew from the NWS Shreveport office also visited area of Howard County Wednesday to see how high water was in some areas.

The National Weather Service Office in Little Rock's warning area included counties north of Howard County. The highest amount recorded in that warning area was more than 14 inches in Murfreesboro in Pike County, Nuttall said.

Flash Flooding ravaged most of Howard and Pike Counties in Southwest Arkansas early Tuesday, resulting in numerous water rescues and considerable damage to structures including Nashville's Police Station and the Howard County jail.

An east-to-west band of heavy rain set up near Nashville shortly before midnight, according to the National Weather Service in Shreveport, La. Significant flooding was reported from Dierks to Nashville to Blevins and Prescott.

A flash flood emergency for southern Pike and Clark counties went into effect shortly before 5 a.m. Tuesday.

At 5:48 a.m., the emergency was expanded for much of southwestern Arkansas, where more than 10 inches of rain had fallen in some places. About 10 a.m., a flash flood emergency was enacted for Howard, Northern Hempstead and Northern Nevada counties.
