High temperatures challenged customers and sellers alike at the Texarkana Community Yard Sale at Spring Lake Park. The once-yearly event had been rescheduled from May 11 due to inclement weather. And though the weather was challenging this year, bright sun and not a rain cloud in sight served as a harbinger for those looking for deals.

"It was hot," seller Pierson Swanger said. Showing merchandise, including what looked like a clutch of mannequin display heads for wigs, hats and the like, the sellers sought to beat the heat as the long day wore on.

The selling began at 8 a.m. and wrapped up around 3 p.m., but the two of them toughed it out. But they came with a strategy.

"We camped out under the tables," Alma Martinez said. "The ice chests we had with us helped."

The sellers were determined to go the distance as the day wore on and the temperatures ratcheted up. They had lots of goods to move.

"We had lots in storage
to sell," Martinez said. "As they say, though, one person's storage is another person's treasure."

Despite the temperatures, customers showed up. Martinez and Swanger had been to the yard sale the previous year, and it seemed the word was getting out about the event.

"There was a little more customers than there were last year," Swanger said. "If we still have more stuff to sell, we will be out here again next year."
