Federal grants boost area food, shelter programs

Miller and Bowie counties are receiving grants in the amount of $21,787 and $45,163, respectively, from the Emergency Food and Shelter Program, according to a United Way of Greater Texarkana official.

The grants are based on the total number of unemployed as compared with the total number of unemployed in all qualifying jurisdictions.

Nonprofit social service agency food and shelter services in Miller and Bowie counties are invited to apply for these funds, said Mark Bledsoe, United Way of Greater Texarkana president/CEO.

Applications must be submitted no later than noon July 10. Applications received after that date will not be considered.

Applications can be requested from United Way of Greater Texarkana at 214 Spruce St., Texarkana, TX, or call (903) 794-3105 and an application may be faxed or sent electronically. A board comprising local representatives will review each of the applications.

Congress has appropriated $120 million to supplement and expand emergency food and shelter programs.
