Early registration is now open for Race for the Cure

Early registration is open for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Texarkana 2019. The race is scheduled for 9 a.m. Oct. 19 beginning at Front Street Plaza in downtown Texarkana.

"We also have an early bird discount going until Aug. 15," said Amber Lawrence, Komen Southwest region director.

Pope Francis pauses during the weekly general audience in St. Peter's Square, at the Vatican, Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2014.

Special registration is $20 for adults, children 2 to 12 and survivors. Virtual registration is also $20.

"That gets you a race bib and race T-shirt, which is really cute," Lawrence said. "It will also save you $5 off the regular price of registration."

Registering early gives teams more time to raise funds.

"You can go ahead and create your teams and start fundraising. There are lots of avenues for that. We can even help you create a website. We do have incentives for those teams that fundraise. We will have a tailgate area the day of the event and a VIP breakfast for the top fundraising team. There are awards and different prizes from Komen for different milestones teams can reach," Lawrence said.

Race organizers are hoping to have 5,000 participants for this year's race, which raises money for breast cancer research and local programs or organizations that diagnose or treat breast cancer.

Race for the Cure has always been well-supported in Texarkana.

"I think it is a great day for family members to support and celebrate those who are going through this journey," Lawrence said. "I also think it's a great way to honor the memory of the ones they love. It's a way for them to give back and help others in the community who are dealing with the same diagnosis their family friends and loves ones have."
