Probe continues in '18 slaying of elderly man

Officials say more evidence has been sent to crime lab

Authorities looking for answers in the 2018 slaying of an elderly Miller County man say another piece of evidence has been submitted.

Marvell McFadden, 71, died Jan. 5, 2018, at his home in Miller County, according to the Miller County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies were dispatched to a house that afternoon near U.S. Highway 67 and Sugar Hill Road in response to a 911 call. On arrival, they found McFadden's body in the backyard of his home.

He died from a gunshot to the upper chest, according to a Miller County Sheriff's Office news release. After the initial investigation, deputies questioned a man who lives on Sugar Hill Road, about a half-mile from McFadden's property. According to the Sheriff's Office, the man and McFadden reportedly had been in an altercation earlier in the day.

No criminal charges were filed against the man. However, two guns were recovered along with evidence at both the crime scene location and the man's home.

The investigation into McFadden's death remains active, said Capt. Mark Lewis, chief deputy for the Miller County Sheriff's Office.

"It's still ongoing. We are coordinating with the prosecutor's office."

Lewis said another piece of evidence has been sent to Little Rock to be examined by the Arkansas State Crime Lab.

"We are still waiting on an analysis of it," he said.
