Bowie County OKs contract for more jail space if needed

NEW BOSTON, Texas-Should Bowie County ever need extra jail room for surpluses of inmates, the county has found space.

Bowie County commissioners agreed Monday to contract with Grayson County for jail space, at $49 per inmate per day in the event of a Bowie County inmate overflow.

Bowie County has a surplus of space to hold both its own inmates as well as Arkansas Department of Correction inmates.

Bowie County Auditor William Tye said that with 748 beds in the Bowie County Correction Center, the building still has enough space for housing county inmates, as well as Arkansas state inmates. Besides having the center, the county also still has about 120 beds at the Bi-State Justice Building Jail.

In other business, commissioners agreed to appoint former Texarkana, Texas, City Council member Van Alexander to serve on the Riverbend Water Resources District Board of Directors.

Alexander will be holding an at-large representative position on the board until the end of 2022. He served nearly 10 years on the Texas-side City Council.
