Scout-o-Rama 'taking over' Spring Lake Park in April

Scout-o-Rama will take place April 26-28 at Spring Lake Park in Texarkana, Texas.

Hundreds of Scouts from all over the Four States area will attend the event and the public is invited.

The Scouting extravaganza will be open to the public from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 27. The opening ceremony will be at 11:30 a.m.

"There is not an 8-year-old alive who doesn't want to shoot a BB gun, catch a fish or make a s'more around a campfire. If you want proof of my statement, come to Scout-o-Rama," said Anthony Escobar, Scout executive for the Caddo Area Council. "Scout-o-Rama is a showcase of our Boy Scouts of America Scouting movement. There are going to be all sorts of fun activities."

Some of the activities and demonstrations that will be taking place include Civil War era reenactors and cannons, Pinewood derby racing, fishing, soap box derby racing, ICS sanctioned chili cook-off, military vehicles on display, Scout craft, tomahawk throwing, Native American dancing/singing, pre-1840s camping demonstrations, blacksmithing, canoeing and food vendors.

"We like to say Scouting is fun and we truly believe there's not an 8-year-old boy or girl that doesn't want to be a part of Boy Scouts of America. They just don't know yet," Escobar said.

The free event is a way to show the community what Scouting is about in hopes of recruiting more Scouts.

"We want to introduce it to mom and dad," Escobar said. "For that weekend, our Caddo Area Council, we are taking over Spring Lake Park. It's just going to be acres of Scouting fun. That's why we open it to the entire community, so we can introduce them to the Boy Scouts of America and the Caddo Area Council. Come have lots of fun."

Bowls of chili from the chili cook-off will be $5 and will be served from noon until it's gone.

Organizers are hoping for 5,000 attendees.

Units can register for free online at 4StatesSOR.com/registration through March 20. After that, there will be a $25 late registration fee. T-shirt and patch orders must be in the Scout Service Center by 5 p.m. April 12.
