A 17-year-old student has been arrested after showing up at Liberty-Eylau High School with a gun.

He was booked into Bi-State jail on charges of possession of a stolen weapon and carrying a firearm on school property.

In addition to pending criminal charges, the student will be subject to automatic expulsion for possessing a firearm on school property per the LEISD discipline grid and the federal Gun Free School Acts, said Matt Fry, director communications for LEISD.

Wake Village Police contacted LEISD Police Chief Bart Veal Monday night regarding an incident at a home between two people where the 17-year-old male threatened his ex-girlfriend with a weapon.

On Tuesday morning, police attempted to to locate the student at his address. They were told by the housing manager that the student no longer lived at that location.

LEISD police waited for the student at the high school entrances and he was stopped, questioned and searched, Fry said. During the search, officers found a firearm in his possession and he was placed under arrest.

"We are thankful for the proactive outreach from the Wake Village Police Department and the swift actions of the LEISD Police Department and high school administrators to ensure that this did not escalate into a more dangerous situation," LEISD Superintendent Ronnie Thompson said in a news release. "Their professionalism every day is an integral part to keeping all LEISD students safe and secure."
