Former Texas High teacher arrested for alleged sexual contact of student

A former Texas High School teacher was arrested last week in Vivian, La. for prohibited sexual contact between an educator and student.

Melinda Meers Elrod, who was working as a teacher at North Caddo High School, was issued a summons from the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office May 3 for the alleged inappropriate activity.

She was hired as a STEM/world geography teacher at Texas High School in April 2017 and resigned her position in April 2018. She was employed from Aug. 7, 2017 through May 30, 2018.

Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office Spokeswoman Cindy Chadwick said Elrod was issued a summons after they were contacted by the school resource officer. She said that detectives interviewed Elrod at the school and issued the summons based on information gained during the interview. Chadwick added that a summons was issued instead of arresting Elrod because the allegation is a misdemeanor and the alleged victim is 17 and not a minor.

Elrod holds a Louisiana teacher's certification in social studies 6-12, which was issued August 30, 2018. She also holds certifications from the Texas Education Agency in history 8-12 and social studies 8-12.
