Board of Trustees for PGISD announces increase in frozen tax

Pleasant Grove Independent School District's Board of Trustees approved the monthly financial report and two service contracts during Thursday's regular meeting.

PGISD Director of Finance Derick Sibley told the board that the Bowie County Central Appraisal District released the 2019 estimated property values, which are $960.8 million, a one percent or $10 million increase over the 2018 certified values that were released at the end of July 2018.

He said that taxpayers over 65 can freeze property values and the district subtracts the frozen values from the property values to determine the total taxable value. The 2019 frozen value ($155 million) increased 8.5 percent above the 2018 frozen values of $143 million.

Sibley also said that there was an 8.5 increase in the frozen tax, which was more than they had seen in the past.

"It makes an impact on the total tax value at the end of the day," he said, The total taxable value of $806 million decreased $2.3 million below the 2018 value of $808 million. The certified property values will be released on or before July 25.

In other business, the board approved a proposal from Studio 230 Lawn and Landscaping Services. The contract is for $31,360 and the company will provide 36 mowings, weed eating, edging, quarterly pruning and flower bed maintenance twice per year for the areas outside the playground or stadium. The contract will begin June 1 and end May 31, 2020.

The board also approved using Abernathy and Olmstead-Kirk as primary janitorial and custodial suppliers. The district will spend approximately $54,000 for the supplies. The contract will also begin June 1 and end May 21, 2020.

The next meeting will be held at 5:45 p.m., Friday, May 24 in the Central Services, 8500 North Kings Highway, Texarkana, Texas.
