Ashdown Jamboree house band to reunite for nursing home residents

ASHDOWN, Ark.-Several regular performers from the old Ashdown Jamboree team up Monday to perform for some very special guests.

In honor of National Nursing Home Week, The musicians will stage a concert titled the "The Ashdown Jamboree Re-visited" for residents of Little River Nursing and Rehab. The public is also invited to attend.

"A lot of longtime friends/musicians will be together once again to perform for the residents," organizer Melodie Clemmons said. The concert will consist of mostly classic country music and gospel music, Clemmons said.

A free lunch of grilled hot dogs and hamburgers will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The concert will be from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Anyone attending should bring a lawn chair. There will be covered seating available also. The address is 162 Highway 32-2A across from Walmart in Ashdown.

Clemmons will perform along with Joe Mack, Henry Matthews and Steve Payne. They were all in the house band at the Ashdown Jamboree during the 1980s. Michael B. of Texarkana will accompany the group on drums.

"I'm so excited to get to play with them again," Clemmons said.

Clemmons sings a lot of Patsy Cline and Connie Smith.

In the early '80s and '90s the old theater in Ashdown was used for the family-owned Ashdown Jamboree country music show. The show was owned and operated by the Tommy Cornelius family of Ashdown. A weekly Saturday night event, the show was the hub of activity for the area. Many celebrities including Freddie Fender performed on the stage.

"It's a unique event for Little River Nursing and Rehab to begin a weeklong celebration for their residents and honor them in many ways," Clemmons said.

The remainder of the week will also include special events for the residents.
