During a regular meeting Monday, the Texarkana, Texas, City Council heard no objections to a proposed annexation.

The Council conducted two required public hearings regarding the voluntary annexation of more than 23 acres into the city limits. No one spoke except Don Morriss, a co-owner of the land, who asked for it to be brought into the city to facilitate its development.

The tract - a wooded area fronting the east side of Gin Road and the north side of Moores Lane-is "prime for development," Morriss said.

The Council conducted six other public hearings on rezoning and permitting matters. No one spoke during the hearings, and the Council voted unanimously to approve each measure considered.

They included:

- rezoning 1705 N. Bishop Road to allow an embroidery shop;

- rezoning 4020 S. Lake Drive to allow a convenience store;

- rezoning a property in the 3200 block of Main Street to allow townhouses;

- granting a specific-use permit to allow a permanent cosmetics business at 3505 Summerhill Road; and

- rezoning 1809 Charlestine St. and granting a specific-use permit to allow a manufactured home.

The Council's next meeting is slated for Tuesday, May 28, rescheduled from its normal fourth-Monday slot to accommodate Memorial Day on May 27.

Under a summer schedule adopted last year, there will be only one Council meeting in June and one in July. Those meetings are scheduled for June 10 and July 8.
