James Bowie posts two-game sweep of Maud in 2A regional quarterfinal

James Bowie's small-ball approach led to regional quarterfinal success Friday evening.

The Pirates defeated Maud, 5-1, in Game 2 of their Class 2A series at Texas High School's Tiger Field.

James Bowie (16-4) clinched the series, two games to none. It also was the Pirates' fourth victory this season over Maud (13-10), their District 17-2A rival.

James Bowie opened the scoring in the opening inning when Brandon Obenoskey drove in Evan Barron with a groundout, after Barron reached on a Cardinal error.

Bowie's Dalton McBride collected the first hit of the game in the third inning and also stole two bases before Whitt Rogers drove him in with a groundout.

After reaching on a walk, Barron crossed home on a wild pitch, giving the Pirates their third run.

Triston White slapped a single to left field for the Cardinals' first hit of the contest. White went 3 for 3 for Maud, with three singles and a stolen base.

Brain Blackburn started on the mound for the Cardinals. He tossed 85 pitches in five innings and gave up three hits.

Cason Lamb broke Maud's scoring drought, driving in Rayne Bailey with a single to left, slicing the Pirates' lead to 3-1.

Lamb finished 1 for 3 with a stolen base and an RBI.

Obenoskey gave the Pirates an insurance run in the fifth frame, slapping a single to right field and allowing Barron to score, expanding JB's lead to 4-1. Obenoskey finished with two hits and two RBI in four at-bats. He also stole a base.

Williams drove in Rogers for the Pirates' second run of the inning, 5-1.

With two outs at the bottom of the sixth and runners in scoring position and on first, the Pirates forced a 5-6 putout that saved a Cardinals' run.

James Bowie will face Cushing or Shelbyville in next week's regional semifinals. Shelbyville won the opener in its series, 15-1.
