The lunch rush begins Tuesday at Daily Restaurant, the new eatery at the former Dairy Queen location on East Street. The College Hill section of Texarkana has few places to go out to eat. and local residents are glad to see a new place opening up so they do not have to travel so far to dine out.

The lunchtime rush begins at Daily Restaurant, and golden chicken in various versions, along with boudain, meat pies and more await hungry diners.

Thayuth Chean, the restaurant's owner, helps serve and take orders to make sure they get their food quickly. As they keep coming, he shifts from one task to another with confidence, the same confidence that had him open the restaurant in the first place.

"The Dairy Queen that was here closed around the end of 2018," Chean said. "When I saw that, I also saw that this part of Texarkana is underserved with businesses, especially restaurants. Not many are close by, folks who live in this area have to go a distance if they want to eat out. I decided to open a new restaurant."

Chean has run food outlets before, with a donut shop under his belt already, and has lived in Texarkana since 2013.

He has noted businesses moving out of the East Street area.

"I'm hoping to help lure business back to this part of town," he said. "We have several chicken brands in Texarkana, so I decided to do something different, opting for chicken with a Cajun flavor, and took on the Krispy Krunchy Chicken brand. I'm introducing it to Texarkana."

So far, the reaction seems good, both with the restaurant and the brand of food.

"I think it is wonderful. I was ready and waiting for a long time for a new restaurant to come to East Street," said Fannie Woods, of Texarkana, Arkansas. "I'm glad they made it over here. I even got to try boudain for the first time."

Having a place close by to go out to eat is definitely a plus for Woods.

"I'm tired of running to Texas to get something to eat," she said. "Thank you, Jesus, for the food."
