TEXARKANA, Texas - The conviction and sentence of life without parole assessed a Hooks, Texas, man in January by a Bowie County jury for the continuous sexual abuse of a young girl was affirmed last week by a Texas appellate court.

David Anthony Turney, 35, was convicted of sexually abusing a girl, born in 2006, from 2015 to May 2017. The girl's sister, who was born in 2004, testified during Turney's trial that Turney abused her as well.

The victim testified during trial that Turney, a relative who lived in the same home with the girls, would often give her candy for playing "special kid" with her. Her sister testified that Turner would give her Pokémon cards when she played "special kid" with him.

Turney's appellate lawyer filed a brief in the case which states he could find no grounds for appeal in the record of Turney's case. The higher court agreed with that assessment and after giving Turney a chance to file a brief on his own, affirmed the conviction.

Continuous sexual abuse of a child under 14 is punishable by 25 years to life in prison and there is no parole eligibility from an sentence imposed for the offense.

Turney is currently being held at the Michael Unit of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice in Tennessee Colony, Texas.
