Temperatures near Texarkana could drop to freezing or near-freezing today and Friday morning.

"This is a very cold air mass that brings freezing temperatures to most, if not all, of the area by early on Friday morning," according to a hazardous-weather statement by the National Weather Service in Shreveport, La.

This hazardous-weather outlook is for southern Arkansas, northern Louisiana, eastern Texas and southeast Oklahoma.

Texarkana's low this morning is expected to be about 35 degrees.

Areas north of Texarkana could see temperatures drop to the freezing mark, according to NWS.

The last of the showers and thunderstorms are expected to clear the area before noon today.

Winds are expected to be out of the north with some gusts as high as 25 mph, according to NWS.

Lows Friday morning should also be in the low to mid-30s, according to NWS. Highs should be in the upper 50s.

Temperatures are expected to increase early next week with highs in the mid-60s Monday and Tuesday.

In advance of cold weather, the NWS warns residents to make sure their pets and livestock have plenty of food and water, and that they are not exposed to extreme cold. Residents should also protect their water pipes and update their winter vehicle-survival kit.

Kits should include:

Jumper Cables

  Flashlights

  Ice scraper

  Water

  Warm clothes
