On a typical day, Holly Hall-Chatman, owner of Beauty Essence Studio on Texas Boulevard, can be seen working with the hair of a customer, seeking to produce the desired results.
But according to Hall-Chatman, it is more than just moving and cutting hair into the desired configuration.
"I'm a different character. I'm outgoing, customer- and family-friendly," she said. "I like people, caring for their needs and helping them both figure out and achieve what they need."
A seven-year veteran of the beauty trade in Texarkana, Hall-Chatman has extensive experience in various aspects of business.
She knows the worlds of money making and hair styling and has come out with a level of familiarity with both — what works, what doesn't and what she wants to do better with her own business.
"I focus on how hair health brings out its fullest potential," she said.
"So it isn't just about the appearance, but what is foundational to essential hair beauty You need to know your clients, communicate with them."
"Here at Beauty Essence Studio we want our clients to be uplifted, rejuvenated, benefiting from the healing atmosphere. I want all my clients to leave here the best version of themselves. Beauty helps bring out their self-confidence."
Hall-Chatman describes herself as a planner by nature. So when the time came to start Beauty Essence Studio, she had a detailed plan based on her experience in the beauty industry and in business. She knew exactly what she wanted to do and how she wanted to do it.
"I knew how things would go and that is how it has happened. My plan has put me in good stead to make the studio happen," she said.
Also, she says her spirituality and her faith have been big parts of the journey.
"I haven't done this alone," she said. "I stepped out on faith this would work and that God would be with me on this journey, and that has also been a key to keeping this going."
Longtime customer Gloria Benton, who has been with Hall-Chatman since almost the beginning, has been in Texarkana even longer. Health considerations have made things more difficult for her. When losing her ability to walk made it harder for her daughter to help her with her styling needs, a family friend recommended Hall-Chatman. She has been a customer ever since.
"I like Holly, what she does," she said. "Holly is able to accommodate my situation and give me the service I need. I've been with her since she opened her doors. It is relaxing here, feels like home. Holly is alright."
Hall-Chatman wants her studio not only to provide family-style service to her clients but also to be an inspiration for a new generation of stylists.
"I want to hire a few stylists and help them learn and grow their craft. But I want them to learn that this is more than just a professional skill. This is about building relationships. I want to spread that around. This would improve the business greatly."
