National Night Out: Police invite public to event aimed at reducing crime, strengthening communities

TEXARKANA - Tuesday is the 36th annual National Night Out, and local police are encouraging residents to get out and meet their neighbors.

The community building campaign is designed to:

n heighten crime prevention awareness;

n generate support for and participation in anti-crime programs;

n strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and

n send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

From 6 p.m to 9 p.m, residents in neighborhoods across Texarkana will turn their porch lights on and gather for an evening outside, according to information from both Texarkana police departments.

Representatives from the police and fire departments and city governments will start visits about 6 p.m. to discuss law enforcement services in their neighborhoods.
