Train accident kills two in Panhandle

AMARILLO, Texas-Police in the Panhandle say two men were killed after the car they were in was struck by a train when the driver apparently tried to go around a lowered crossing arm.

The Amarillo-Globe News reports that the car the men were in was hit by a BNSF train traveling east late Thursday near Pampa.

Pampa police Sgt. Brian Massey said the pickup driver, 20-year-old Daniel Ortiz, died from his injuries at a Pampa hospital.

The passenger, 23-year-old Austin Rodgers, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Evidence indicated Ortiz tried to cross the train tracks by driving around the lowered crossing arm.

Authorities said no train personnel were injured.
